Phosphor Bronze Table Tops — PB102
Phosphor bronze table tops are among the most technically demanding metal surfaces we fabricate. Produced from PB102 sheet and developed through controlled patination, these pieces sit well beyond copper or brass — both in material behaviour and fabrication complexity.
The examples shown here were produced as one-off commissions, combining spinning, pressing, welding, and hand-finishing to create statement table surfaces with long-term depth and character. These are not catalogue products, but material-led pieces made for design-driven interiors where the choice of metal matters.

Material & Fabrication
These table tops are fabricated from PB102 phosphor bronze sheet, selected for its strength, wear resistance, and distinctive ageing characteristics. Compared with copper, phosphor bronze is significantly stiffer and more spring-hard, requiring greater forming force and corrective working to achieve accurate profiles.
All examples shown use 1.2mm phosphor bronze sheet bonded to a 30mm MDF core, which represents the maximum practical thickness for this material and construction method.

Phosphor bronze does not behave like copper during forming. Its increased spring-back makes shaping and edge work considerably more demanding, particularly where tight tolerances and clean lines are required.

Formed Shapes & Construction
Round table top — spun
The round table top (750mm diameter) was spun from phosphor bronze sheet, a process significantly more challenging than spinning copper due to the material’s stiffness and resistance to deformation. Achieving a smooth, consistent profile required careful control and corrective forming throughout the process.
Oval table top — pressed, rolled, and welded
The oval table top (1200 × 750mm) was fabricated using a different approach:
- The outer edge was pressed as an angled section
- Rolled and carefully pulled around the perimeter
- Fully welded around the entire edge
- Welds dressed and blended to maintain surface continuity
This fully welded construction avoids folded shortcuts and ensures long-term stability, but adds substantial fabrication time — one of the reasons phosphor bronze table tops remain rare.

Phosphor Bronze vs Copper
To the untrained eye, phosphor bronze can appear similar to copper at first glance. In practice, the two materials differ significantly.
Copper tends to oxidise towards warmer red-brown tones, while phosphor bronze matures into deeper, darker bronze hues with greater subtlety and complexity. Its surface is less reflective, more restrained, and evolves slowly over time rather than settling into a fixed appearance.
This long-term ageing behaviour is a defining characteristic of phosphor bronze and a key reason it is specified for projects where depth and permanence are valued.
Patina & Ageing
Phosphor bronze does not hold a static finish. From installation, the surface continues to develop, gradually deepening in tone as the metal responds to light, touch, and environment.
Rather than aiming for uniformity, patination is controlled to encourage natural variation, allowing the material to express its character over time. Each table top will age uniquely, forming part of the story of the piece rather than remaining visually unchanged.

Commissioning
Phosphor bronze table tops are produced exclusively as one-off commissions. Due to material cost, forming difficulty, and fabrication time, they are not suitable for budget-led or high-volume projects.
