Designs 05 creates beautiful bespoke natural brass table tops using the best quality traditional yellow brass sheet metal. We can create a brass table top in one piece without joints up to 290cm long x 90cm wide or up to 90cm in diameter. The brass is wrapped seamlessly around the timber core.

This brass dining table top has been used for some time and has acquired a rustic patina. Construction: The brass sheet is formed around a 3cm MRMDF board and double returned underneath, so the metal edge is hidden. Corners are welded, and there are no visible fixings.

Note the brass splashback in the background, this is also with a patina finish.

Brass and Patina Knowledge

Brass is a unique metal that develops a natural patina over time as it interacts with its surroundings. This patina is a record of the metal’s history, as visible scuffs, scratches, and lighter or darker areas all blend together to create a one-of-a-kind product with a rustic character.

However, it’s important to note that tea, coffee, and juice spills can affect the patina, so it’s best to clean them up promptly. While stainless steel is known for its sterility, brass requires a gentler hand. Warm soapy water is the best way to clean it, and scotchbite pads can be used to address any excess patina or trouble spots, though this can remove the patina back to bright metal.

Should you decide to have your brass tabletop lacquered, be sure to take care to avoid scratching by using trivets, placemats, and insulated mats for anything hot. Display tables are also perfect candidates for lacquering, as long as you protect the finish from damage.

Table Bases and Design Notes

We find most clients prefer to search and find their own base. There are so many options, just Google “table bases uk” and you are presented with an array of styles and suppliers. Searching through architectural reclaim locally or online can be very interesting and rewarding. Should a client have their own design for a bespoke table base we can often help.

Note that if you are finding your own base, you should do this before ordering a bespoke brass table top so you get the dimensions correct. Also, ensure the table base is strong enough. A 3cm thick brass top weighs circa 34 kilos per square meter. This weight is not always pro rata for thicker tops. You can get an approximate weight of other designs if you send us a design brief with dimensions.

Please send us a photo of your base before placing an order so we can check the fixing point locations.

So, all in all, it can be a very interesting and rewarding project to design your own brass dining table or occasional table.

Brass Table Tops Design Features

You can design your own brass dining table top; there are many features to choose from. Email us a design spec, and we can start a discussion and estimate a price. For example, a standard spec could be a rectangular natural brass top 150cm x 75cm x 3cm thick with straight sides or a circular natural brass top 90cm diameter with a bull-nosed edge.

Brass Table Tops Finishes

After fabrication, tops go to our patina studio for finishing. There are four standard options, and bespoke patinas can be developed by commission. The patina pattern and shades on the actual brass top will vary from those depicted below. Patina is not an exact process; each piece we do is unique to the work in hand and is not reproducible.

Other Styles and sizes of Brass Table Tops Available

beaten brass table top

Authentic hammered brass table top, (beaten by a traditional British copper smith), this is quite unlike thin machine beaten brass which is commonly sold.

Hammered brass is quite retro it was used years ago for pub table tops.

Table tops up to 90cm in diameter, squares up to 100cm x 100cm and rectangles up to 200cm x 100cm can be made.

We spin the round tops on a spinning lathe. Note that the sides do not have a beaten effect.

Mirror polished brass table top: We send brass sheets to a specialist polisher to get this finish. We also make mirrors from this sheet. The soft yellow tones in the image offer something different.

There is a slight grain in the polished finish. This is normal. With regular polishing, the grain lessens more. Clean with Brasso-type cleaners. A coat of Renaissance wax extends the time between cleans; it creates a very thin barrier to the air.
