Descriptions of the Copper Finishes Shown in the Gallery
Hammered Copper, also referred to as Beaten Copper or Hand Beaten Copper | Mirror polished and hand-beaten by our coppersmiths in the UK, the beating pattern is random, and the sheet is 0.7mm thick (22 gauge). After beating, the sheet has a curvature because of stretching caused by beating. This will straighten out when folds are applied or when bonded to a substrate and clamped. |
Natural Copper, also called Mill Finish | This is the copper sheet, as it comes from a European rolling mill. The finish is semi-bright and can vary from batch to batch. All our copper sheet metal finishes start with natural copper. |
Brushed Copper also called Dull Polished Copper | This is a finish applied by our subcontract metal polishers. It is applied by machine and is uniform. The grain runs along the length of the sheet. If you design with this sheet, take note of grain direction. The brushed finish acquires a natural patina rapidly. |
Mirror Copper, also called Polished Copper or Bright Polished Copper | Our mirror-polished copper sheet is double-polished to achieve a higher quality than normal commercial mirror-sheet copper. However, note that there is a directional grain (more observable when viewed obliquely), so when you are designing features, this may need to be considered. The maintenance for mirror copper is repolishing with Brasso-type products, reducing any noticeable grain with each application. |
Bronze Dapple Copper | The bronze dapple effect is a process devised by our artisan patina applicators to achieve a bespoke finish to fit a requirement by an interior designer |
Flame Patina Copper also called Flamed Copper and Flame Painted Copper | Flame patina is achieved by a flame painting technique, otherwise called flame coloured copper it is achieved by using a hot flame to produce many colours and tones in copper. The method and finishes are open to interpretation by the artist. |
Bespoke Aged Copper | This is a bespoke finish we created for a designer, it accentuates an industrial decor interior style by combining patchwork copper pieces with rivets and dark copper patinas |
Typical Aged Copper | This is a standard go-to finish for creating a patina on copper. It is called typical because the process is artisan in nature. All finishes are hand-applied, and the patterns and shades vary from piece to piece. Click here to view an example in situ. |
Antique Copper | The antique-finish copper sheet patina was created to give a deeper, aged finish, to show copper as it would be when it is much older. The visual movement between lighter and darker areas creates interest for the viewer. |
Distressed Green Copper (Pre-Patinated) | This is an interesting byproduct of the adjacent image of the Green Pre-patinated Finish. It is the reverse side of the sheet, totally uncontrolled, with lineal areas of green amid a brown-aged expanse. |
Green Copper (Pre-patinated) or, in the industry, just Patina Copper as it is the most natural form of patina. | This is as natural as you can get to copper, which has been on a roof in the environment for 10 years or more; just like it has naturally aged in the elements. This product is used by architects who are designing high-end buildings. Follow this link for examples. |
Blue Copper No.1, No.2 & No.3 | There are 3 images in this row. Each displays varying amounts of blue patina. We can vary the ratio of blue to copper to some degree. It is an artisan product, and the amount of blue and pattern differs for each piece produced. Every job is a statement piece that can not be reproduced except photographing. |
